ORLEU | Branch of JSC National Center for Professional Development “Orleu” PDI in Almaty City | Peculiarities of using artificial intelligence tools in the learning process

In the conditions of modernization of education, it is especially important to change the activities of professional development of companies, to respond to their public demands and at the same time to raise teachers’ professional level and develop teaching skills, to update and improve their work on methodological support for the renewal of the content of education.
The main focus of the professional development system of “Orleu” Centre is to strengthen the professional competence of teachers so that they will be able to use not only new teaching skills and technologies, but also develop them and bring reflexive changes to their professional activities in the context of ongoing reforms.

One of the objectives of teachers’ professional development is to form a positive attitude towards the future use of artificial intelligence in the educational process.

Currently, many teachers are wary of neural networks, the reason for this is ambiguity, lack of understanding about how their use will affect the education process. However, advances in technologies and constant changes in artificial intelligence do not affect interpersonal communication, which is undoubtedly very important in learning.
The digital world is changing and evolving at a tremendous speed, so teachers must constantly update and enhance their knowledge. In this regard, the National Centre for Professional Development “Orleu” holds various events, including training courses on this topic.

How effectively artificial intelligence can be used in education was discussed at the republican master class “Peculiarities of using artificial intelligence tools in the learning process”, held in the branch of National Centre for Professional Development “Orleu” in Almaty - the Institute of Professional Development.

Humanity is on the threshold of the era of artificial intelligence. John McCarthy, an American scientist first used the word “artificial intelligence”. It was originally a computer programme for automatically proving mathematical theorems. Later, the system went beyond algorithmic work and was trained for functions such as accumulation of knowledge, analysis, problem solving, planning, forecasting. That is, an ability to think has been implanted in the artificial intelligence. For this purpose, a digital replica of the neural networks of the human brain was created.

Artificial intelligence is a rapidly growing field. There are more and more programmes that can perform various tasks around the world. What seemed impossible to a man twenty years ago is now becoming a reality. In this regard, an opportunity to generate ideas for the future with the use of artificial intelligence is high and they are widely used.
The main purpose of the master class was to provide methodological support to teachers, share experience in the use of artificial intelligence and promote the use of its potential in teaching.
Yerzhan Turganbayuly Meldebekov, the Head of the Institute, described different methods and possible advantages of responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence technologies in education. Information technologies are rapidly changing various fields, including education. The integration of artificial intelligence in education is transforming learning, teaching and assessment. Artificial intelligence-based tools and applications provide personalised and tailored learning, automate administrative duties for teachers, and improve overall learning outcomes.

Overall, the workshop was aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of artificial intelligence in education and its potential to transform learning in the future.

Artificial intelligence can revolutionise education, offering new opportunities for personalised learning and improved students' outcomes. Despite the fact that there are challenges that need to be solved, for example the need to ensure the reliability and impartiality of AI systems, its benefits in education are clear. As artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve, we may see even more innovative ways to apply it to education in the coming years.
At the event, speakers spoke on the following topics: “Peculiarities of using AI in the learning process / D-ID Studio Platform (AI)”, “Effective use of artificial intelligence platforms in the educational process”, “Teaching AI in schools”, “What is Artificial Intelligence and its benefits and harms to humanity”, “How to use ChatGPT in planning lessons”, “Peculiarities of artificial intelligence in education”, and also shared their experience, and the participants got acquainted with the algorithm of work of various platforms and programmes.

Using the Studio D-ID platform, you can create video presentations dubbed by artificial intelligence. This innovative approach saves time and resources and is widely used by video content creators and educational platforms. Studio D-ID has the advantage of having a wide range of photorealistic or animated artificial intelligence avatars to choose from. The platform enables teachers to create universal footage in a number of languages with simple commands - no need for multilingual speakers or additional video shooting.
ChatGPT helps to improve the quality of education by enhancing teacher-student interaction. The speakers talked about the advantages and disadvantages of this artificial intelligence tool. With the help of technologies, a neural network can execute the most “impossible” commands of a user. ChatGPT can help teachers distribute resources efficiently.
From a pedagogical point of view, it seems more important to use artificial intelligence in promoting competences that enable people to overcome learning difficulties, so that it replaces the skills that are the basis of important cognitive abilities. Although artificial intelligence has not yet reached the level of a human brain, it has unlimited capacity and rapid learnability.

As the reporters noted, artificial intelligence makes it possible to significantly raise the efficiency of the education system, personalise the learning process in accordance with the individual needs of students, and significantly reduce the administrative burden on teachers. It personalises learning and provides formative assessment at a completely new level, something a teacher cannot do in a class of 25 students.
Zhanar Alibekovna Zhartynova, Senior Lecturer of the Institute, Academician of the Academy of Informatisation, shared her thoughts on the peculiarities of using artificial intelligence tools in education. Artificial intelligence is actively applied in many fields of human life, including education. Today, people all over the world have an opportunity to use modern technologies in the educational process to improve its quality and effectively develop necessary professional skills.

At the end of the masterclass, participants were surveyed about their impressions. The feedback was positive: “As always, everything is simple and clear! Thank you very much!”, “The masterclass was held at a very high level, we have learnt about various new, streamlined platforms related to AI”, “I enjoyed it, thank you very much!”, “Great, host more such events”, “Thank you very much to the organisers, as always we got a new impetus for our work. I would like to see such trainings held more often!”, “‘It was a high-level event, interesting and useful”.
Despite the results achieved by the neural network, artificial intelligence is still in its infancy, but even this level is sufficient to improve teachers’ effectiveness. Experts predict that the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will soon become a major factor in the evolution of the entire education system.
